SHINING LIGHT SERIES - Feathers - Floor Pillow
*As a child from an immigrant family - my thoughts, feelings, and relationship with Canada is conflicted. I am so grateful that Canada took in my family during a time that many doors were shut to them. But my family fled Sri Lanka from civil war - from a government who tried to erase my culture and eradicate my people... and for this, as I learn more about our First Nations people and the atrocities committed to them, my perspectives have widened, parallels have been drawn and my empathy has grown. It is so difficult to not see what happened to my people happening right here in my own backyard to the Aboriginal community in Canada.
In May 2021, the remains of 215 First Nations children were found in an unmarked mass grave at the Kamloops Residential School. In June 2021, over 100 bodies are expected to be found in Manitoba and 35 in Saskatchewan. This is only the beginning of the investigation and a heartbreaking reality is that thousands will be uncovered. For those who are unaware, Residential Schools were created by the Canadian federal government (with aid from the church), to essentially commit cultural genocide. Native children were taken from homes, separated from the cultures and families, so that they could assimilate and be part of Canadian culture. The residential schools were notorious for having horrible living conditions, unsanitary drinking water, and children were verbally, emotionally, physically, and sexually abused. It's reported that some of the children whose remains were found were as young as three years old - this hit me especially hard as the news came out on my daughter's third birthday. I can't imagine what those children went through, what their families went through, and my heart breaks at their loss on so many levels.
This design was created in honour of those children, their families, and all of the ones that have yet to be found. It is the third design to be brought into our Shining Light Series and 100% of the proceeds will go to the the Legacy of Hope Foundation. LHF is a national Indigenous charitable organization with the mandate to educate and create awareness and understanding about the Residential School System, including the intergenerational impacts such as the removal of generations of Indigenous children from their families, including the Sixties Scoop, the post-traumatic stress disorders that many First Nations, Inuit, and Metis continue to experience, all while trying to address racism, foster empathy and understanding and inspire action to improve the situation of Indigenous Peoples today. The LHF supports the ongoing healing process of Residential School Survivors, and their families and seeks their input on projects that honour them.
